Six reasons to love Augusta University

As some of you may know, I recently started a new position at my alma mater, Augusta University. With all the nostalgia running through my veins from my first week back, here are some reasons why I love AU.

It’s growing rapidly.

One of the best things about being a student at this university is being able to physically see your tuition and fees at work. I started my journey with Augusta in 2013 and since then, so many buildings have been constructed such as residence halls, academic spaces and the new Cyber Center. Recently, they just broke ground on a new building for Science and Mathematics.

In addition to buildings, they are constantly renovating spaces with the latest technology and furniture. It’s very comforting to walk around campus knowing that your university is staying up to date and putting your money to good use.

Campus is beautiful.

I know I’m biased, but I honestly think AU has one of the most beautiful campuses in the state. There’s always nice, green grass and colorful flowers across all of the campuses. Mix that in with the modern designs for the buildings create a gorgeous aesthetic. You find places all throughout the different campus to take some great pictures for your Instagram feed. I personally think you aren't truly a student if haven’t took at least one pic with the Blanchard fountain.

Augusta is close to everywhere.

Not only is there a great deal of things to do in the city, but you’re not too far from anything if you want to leave town. Atlanta, Savannah, Ga. and Charlotte, NC. are only about 2.5 hours away. You can definitely plan a weekend trip to one of the places without an overwhelming drive. Since the majority of students are in-state residents, you can always make a quick trip home if you need.

Population is diverse.

Diversity is highly valued in today’s world. As AU continues to increase it’s enrollment, the student population is increasingly diverse in every sense of the word. You don’t have to search for groups to make you feel comfortable. There are students of all backgrounds, cultures, ages, races and socioeconomic statuses.

Also, inclusivity is one of the university's core values. Different organizations and departments are consistently putting on programs to create a welcoming and supportive culture for all students.

There’s a ton of outdoor activities.

The city of Augusta is full with different activities to get you outside. There are so many trails to go for a nice walk or run. You can go to Lake Olmstead or Lake Oconee. Visit the Augusta Canal. They have a bridge with cute locks attached by Augusta couples. There are plenty of parks for an outdoor workout. Not to mention you can go kayaking on the Savannah River. Students can borrow kayaks from AU’s Wellness Center.

It’s easy to get involved.

As a student, you should definitely try to be involved on campus for multiple reasons, but mainly to help you enjoy your time on campus. While I was a student, I was an Orientation Leader, worked in the JSAC, planned campus events for the Jaguar Production Crew and ended as the president for our Student Government Association.

These experiences helped me grow personally and professionally. As the university continues to grow, so does student life. You can easily become a part of a student organization or create your own. If you are a current student, now is a great time to make an impact on the university because history is being written everyday.
